AlpineQuest 1.2.12 is out ! (Release notes)

Advantages

Using the memory card to store maps is interesting because:

  • Maps are available even if the user is outside network coverage (mountains, abroad, …);
  • Viewing maps doesn't require Internet downloads (useful for volume limited mobile phone packages);
  • Viewing maps remains always fast and doesn't depend on signal quality.

On-board (Offline) Maps

AlpineQuest uses maps from files stored on your SD memory card. It uses the AQM map format, which is a raster map format that supports image compression and multi-levels. Maps can be oriented according to the North (using the magnetic sensor) and you can be located on them (using the GPS chip).

You can create your offline maps using a lot of web sources using the free Mobile Atlas Creator software. This allows you to create maps on your PC using your high speed home Internet access.

Landmarks

With AlpineQuest you can browse and display data from GPX files (standard format for GPS data exchange), KML files (used in Google Earth) and LOC files (used for Geocaching).

AlpineQuest can also save locations, create routes and record tracks in GPX files. You can get statistics and export them to any compatible application (like Google Earth).
